On 17 June 2026, leaders, development partners, policymakers, and community champions will gather at Africana Hotel for the She Leads Conference 2026 under a powerful message:
"Include Her in Decision Making."
This theme comes at a critical moment. Across Uganda and beyond, refugee women are already leading change in their families, communities, and organizations. They are entrepreneurs, educators, peacebuilders, and advocates. Yet, despite their contributions, many remain excluded from the very conversations and decisions that determine their futures.
Leadership Exists—Recognition Must Follow
Refugee women have repeatedly demonstrated resilience and leadership in the face of displacement and uncertainty. Organizations across Uganda are increasingly being led by refugees themselves, with women playing central roles in community development and advocacy.
From promoting education and vocational skills to championing gender equality and social inclusion, women-led initiatives are proving that sustainable development is strongest when communities are empowered from within.
However, leadership is not only about carrying responsibility; it is also about having influence. Too often, women are expected to implement programmes without being involved in designing them.
Why Inclusion Matters
When women participate meaningfully in decision-making: Communities become more resilient. Development programmes respond better to real needs. Peacebuilding efforts become more sustainable. Future generations benefit from more inclusive societies.
