From Theory to Practice: Making Organic Fertilizers and Insecticides
ESSAF Uganda Empowers Women with Hands-On Agroecology Techniques
The second day of ESSAF Uganda’s workshop with the St. Marita Agroecology School, held on the 15th of May 2024, was all about practical applications. Building on the knowledge from the previous day, the women were introduced to hands-on techniques in agroecology.
The focus of the day was on making organic fertilizers and insecticides. The trainers demonstrated how to create organic fertilizers using readily available materials such as compost and manure. They highlighted the benefits of these organic inputs, including cost savings and environmental sustainability.
Next, the women learned how to make organic insecticides using common household ingredients like chili, garlic, and aloe vera. These natural insecticides are effective in controlling pests without the harmful effects associated with chemical pesticides. The women were fascinated by these simple yet powerful techniques and eager to try them out on their farms.
Throughout the day, the trainers provided step-by-step instructions and practical tips, ensuring that the women felt confident in applying these methods. By the end of the session, the women had not only gained new skills but also a renewed sense of empowerment and motivation to improve their farming practices.
The two-day workshop concluded with a commitment from ESSAF Uganda to continue supporting the St. Marita Agroecology School in their journey towards sustainable agriculture. The women left the workshop with valuable knowledge and practical skills that would help them enhance their productivity and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system.
